Rock Inquiry

We started a new unit in Science on rocks and minerals and the Earth's resources.  To begin today we spent time examining some rocks Mrs. Hoffman brought in from her backyard.  We completed a rock report which covered what the rock looked like and felt like and we drew our rock.  Then we shared the information with the rest of the class.  What a fun way to start this new unit!

Crazy Hair Day

Last Friday, January 25, Mrs. Hoffman's class did a fun art activity.  We had "crazy hair" day.  The students were to draw a face on the head that was on the paper.  Then they were to draw lines-all kinds of lines to create hair.  The students had a lot of fun and we have some cool pictures on our classroom door!

100 days of school

Wednesday, January 23 was the 100th day of school for Chadron Public Schools.  In honor of that distinction, Mrs. Hoffman's class, tried to perform 100 acts of kindness.  Each time a student was kind to someone else they recorded their efforts on a chart.   Each student was charged with doing 5 to 6 acts of kindness in order for the class to accomplish 100 acts in all.  We also had 100's day stew for snack.  Each student was asked to bring 100 of something, dry cereal, chocolate chips, M&Ms, gummy worms, etc. to add to the bowl.  We then stirred everything together and divided it between us all.  What a great snack we had!  We had a fun day today and we are looking forward to the next 100 days!

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day recitation

On Friday, the third grade students watched a terrific video about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.  Then after lunce the students were entertained by Mrs. Grant's reading group doing a recitation on Martin Luther King, Jr.  Each student in Mrs. Grant's reading class had a part to read as well as contributing to the choral reading sections.  The majority of the third grade students sat on the stairs to view the presenters, who stood on the landing below.  They did an excellant job!

Mulitplication Tables

We are working diligently on our multiplication facts.  If you have flashcards at home, please use them with your child.  If not try quizzing your child about the multiplication facts.  We need to get these down before we head to fourth grade!

This week we learned about measurement and how to measure liquid and dry ingredients.  Then as part of our Math Lesson on Wednesday we made brownies.  We had four groups going and each group made their own batch of brownies.  Each student in the group had a specific ingredient they were to measure and add to the batter.  We had a few mishaps such as a couple broken eggs in one group and an extra teaspoon of salt at another group.  All in all we had a good time mixing up our brownies and an even better time eating them Thursday and Friday for snack.  The children all took home a copy of the recipe but just in case anyone would like, we will include the recipe here in this blog.  Its quick and easy and makes great brownies!
