Bird Watch

Our Third grade year ended with a trip to Chadron State Park to participate in the annual bird watch.  Third graders loaded the bus and left CIS at 7:00.  We traveled to the state park where we spent an enjoyable morning learning about birds.  We learned how to identify birds that were banded and how we could use the band color to gather information about birds.  We learned how important the parent birds are for gathering food for the young ones in the nest and the dangers to birds gathering food.  We also looked for interesting birds and how to identify the birds we spotted.  Then we divided into small groups and spent some time birding (looking for and identifying various birds).  We enjoyed a snack, some play time and then loaded the bus to return to the school.  We had a lot of fun, the weather was beautiful, and we were able to spot quite a few different birds.

End of the Year Reader's Theater

This past week of school has been a busy, fun-filled week.  We decided to have fun in our reading class and extend our studies of the Fairytale genre.  We donned masks and performed short plays for our classmates and some of the other reading groups.  We read the story of Cinderella and a Chinese version called Yeh-Shen.  Then we performed several other fairytales including, Little Red Ridinghood, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Goldilocks and The Three Bears, and The Three Little Pigs.  We had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs as we put life to our stories!

On Wednesday, May 1, our class traveled to the Dawes County Museum.  We spent the morning at the 1880's school learning to write with a quill pen and ink and reading from the McGuffey readers.  We practiced math and orthography (spelling).  We even had a spelling bee. Jesse won the award for best deportment, Poseidon won the award for best penmanship, and Taryn is our best speller!
We had a lot of fun wearing our 1880's clothes, packing our lunches in tin pales, and playing old fashioned games.  The weather was quite chilly but we had fun anyway!
