Bird Banding

Wednesday, the third grade classes took our first field trip to Chadron State Park to watch as the staff from the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory banded some birds.  Unfortunately, for us who went in the afternoon, they did not catch any birds in their nets.  We did see a demonstration (using a stuffed bird) of the procedures for banding birds, weighing them, measuring them, and discovering their age.  We also played some "Bird Olympics" and went on a nature hike.  Even though it was a very warm afternoon we enjoyed our time at the state park.

Cowgirl Peg Comes To Town

"Cowgirl Peg" otherwise known as Peg Sundberg visited Chadron Intermediate School this afternoon.  She shared with us the steps in the writing process, planning, writing, proofreading, editing, rewriting, and publishing.  She also shared pictures of her inspirations, her animals on her Wyoming ranch.  Then she read three of her stories.  We enjoyed hearing all about her life, her animals and her dream of writing children's books.

Dictionaries

The third grade classes were very lucky today as they received a visit from Mr. Jim Schaefer from the Rotary Club.  He came bearing gifts in the form of a student dictionary.  The students were very excited to find so much fascinating  information in these dictionaries.  They found the longest word in the English language, information about continents, countries, and states, presidents, and even the Constitution!  We will definitely be using these dictionaries for a long time!

Writing is hard work

We have been busy working on creating sentences.  We are learning about subjects and predicates.  We are also learning how to proofread passages and all about the fun proofreading marks and what they mean.
